Misa Edito:
A national treasure, on loan from a temple in Nara (奈良), was on exhibit in the Tōkyō National Museum. This seated Buddha held its own against the various permanent collection pieces and traveling exhibition pieces inside the museum… as well as the beauty and sculpted nature of the surrounding grounds and garden. As we walked around the grounds, stars in our own confetti parade from the still blooming/falling sakura (桜), we used little individual rock, stone-step paths to make our way around the serene pond and preserved teahouses. Toward the back we stumbled upon teahouses rented out for private parties: little obasans(old ladies)/ojisans (old men) laughing it up or bidding farewell- and though cute as can be… not the grace and decorum I’d imagined geishas displaying in the teahouses of centuries past. After leaving the grounds- sakura petals whirling about us- into Ueno park and happened across 1950’s USA! A rock-a-billy group set up a circle to dance away their inhibitions and stress to the likes of Grease. Join if you want… but these guys come complete with costumes, dance routines and greased back hair ;)
